Minecraft ore levels on Java and Bedrock from 1.18 through 26.2: diamonds and redstone at Y=-59, iron at Y=16 or mountain Y=232, gold at Y=-16, lapis near Y=0, copper near Y=48, coal near Y=96, emerald high in mountain biomes, ancient debris at Nether Y=15–16.

Caves & Cliffs: Part II stretched the Overworld from Y=-64 to Y=320 and gave each ore its own peak. Java 1.20.2 then added extra diamond blobs below Y=0. The 26.x game drops keep that height map.

Heights come from the Minecraft Wiki ore tables and the generation batches on Ore (feature).

How ore generation works

Most Overworld ores use a triangle curve. Frequency climbs toward a center height, then falls off. A few batches stay uniform, so every Y in that range has the same chance.

World height now runs from bedrock at Y=-64 up to the build limit at Y=320. Deepslate takes over as you pass Y=0. Stone-type ores become deepslate variants there.

The generator also discards some blobs that touch air. Diamond and coal take the heaviest skip. A hallway through solid deepslate exposes buried ore the caves leave behind.

Diamonds

Diamond ore generates from Y=16 down to Y=-64. Count rises as you go deeper. Snapshot 23w31a (Java 1.20.2) added a uniform batch from Y=-64 to Y=-4, so deepslate gained a second diamond pass.

Y=-59 is the peak layer. Bedrock already replaces some of those blocks. Lava fills aquifers below Y=-55, which puts a -59 floor in the splash zone. A trunk at Y=-53 keeps your feet on dry stone.

Branch mining for diamonds

  1. Reach deepslate with an iron pickaxe or better. Efficiency and Haste help, because deepslate mines slower than stone.
  2. Dig a 1×2 hallway at Y=-59 or Y=-53. Check F3 on Java, or turn on coordinates on Bedrock, so the floor sits on your target Y.
  3. Cut side branches every 2 or 3 blocks. That spacing exposes fresh stone on each wall.
  4. Carry a water bucket, extra blocks, and food. Pour water on lava, then scoop the source back.

Fortune III multiplies diamond drops. Silk Touch keeps the ore block if you want to move it. Cave walls show diamonds now and then. Buried veins in solid deepslate are the reliable paycheck.

Iron

Iron uses these official batches on the Ore (feature) page:

  • A mountain triangle from Y=80 to 384, peaking near Y=232
  • A mid-world triangle from Y=-24 to 56, peaking near Y=16
  • A small uniform scatter from Y=-64 to 72

Wander caves around Y=16 in the first hour. Once you have food and a bucket, strip exposed stone on a tall peak. A single cliff face can dump a full stack.

Java also grows iron veins in tuff between about Y=-60 and Y=-8. Follow the tuff spaghetti and you will hit raw iron blocks mixed into the vein.

Gold

Overworld gold peaks near Y=-16 and lives from Y=-64 to 32. Badlands, eroded badlands, and wooded badlands add a huge extra batch from Y=32 to 256. A mesa run covers powered rails and the gold half of netherite ingots.

Nether gold ore is a separate block. It drops nuggets and shows up through most of the Nether column.

Lapis, redstone, and copper

Lapis peaks near Y=0. One batch hides from air, so you will see plenty of it buried or underwater.

Redstone shares diamond country. Mine the deepslate floor and you will bag both.

Copper peaks near Y=48 and runs from Y=-16 to 112. Dripstone caves spawn larger blobs. Copper veins snake through granite between Y=0 and Y=50. After The Copper Age (Java 1.21.9, Bedrock 1.21.111), those ingots also feed copper tools and copper golems.

Coal and emerald

Coal lives at and above Y=0. Mojang's 1.18 notes put the bias at Y=96 and higher. Walk a mountain or a windswept hill and you will see it in the stone. Grab fuel there before you commit to a deep trip.

Emerald generates as scattered blocks in mountain and windswept biomes: meadows, cherry groves, groves, snowy slopes, the peak biomes, and windswept hills variants. Frequency climbs with height. Hunt it on peaks at Y=85 and above.

Deepslate mining

Below Y=0 the stone turns to deepslate. Hardness jumps from 3 to 4.5. An iron pickaxe is the minimum, and a diamond pickaxe with Efficiency makes the shift feel fair. Night Vision or a tight torch line keeps the gray walls readable.

Ancient debris and netherite

Ancient debris generates in the Nether. The Wiki debris page puts the average peak at Y=16.

Java tries one triangle cluster from Y=8 to 24 and one uniform cluster from Y=8 to 119. Bedrock tries extra clusters in those same bands, so a Bedrock chunk can hide a few more blocks. The generator places debris inside netherrack, basalt, and blackstone (Java also replaces the last two). Air-facing placements get skipped.

A diamond pickaxe is required to collect the block. TNT and beds clear netherrack around it because debris has a blast resistance of 1200. Smelt scraps, craft ingots with gold, then upgrade diamond gear at a smithing table. The netherite armor walkthrough covers the smithing template step that arrived in 1.20.

Java and Bedrock notes

Mine the same peak Y on both editions. Bedrock iron blobs run a little larger, and ancient debris gets extra cluster tries in the same height bands. Infested stone in mountain biomes uses different Y bounds per edition.

FAQ

Should I mine diamonds at Y=-59 or Y=-53?

Y=-59 has the densest ore. Y=-53 keeps the hallway above the deep lava aquifers. Run a -53 trunk and drop a short shaft when you want the peak layer.

Did 1.21 or the 26.x drops move ores?

The 1.18 peaks apply. The meaningful diamond buff arrived in 1.20.2. Later 1.21 and 26.x drops left the height map in place.

Where do I mine iron in the first hour?

Caves around Y=16. After you have food and a water bucket, a nearby mountain above Y=80 can dump a stack in minutes.

What Y-level is ancient debris?

Y=15–16 in the Nether. Beds or TNT expose it. A diamond pickaxe picks it up.

Do Fortune and Silk Touch change the best Y-level?

They change drops. The spawn map stays put. Fortune III is the diamond, coal, lapis, redstone, and copper pick. Silk Touch is for moving ore, or for nether gold you plan to smelt.
