How to fix Hytale server lag (RAM, CPU and view distance)

Hytale server lag usually comes from view distance and players exploring apart, which use RAM, or from player and mob counts, which use CPU. Lower MaxViewRadius to 12 chunks or less first, then cut extra worlds, check new mods, add RAM, and pick a region near your players.

To fix Hytale server lag, lower the server's maximum view distance first. Hypixel calls view distance the main driver of RAM use and recommends capping it at 12 chunks (384 blocks).

If the server still lags, check how many worlds are loaded, remove the newest mod, and then look at more RAM. Work through the fixes in order, because the first ones cost nothing.

What makes a Hytale server lag

Hypixel's Server Manual splits server load into two drivers:

ResourceWhat drives it up
CPUHigh player or entity counts (NPCs, mobs)
RAMLarge loaded world area: high view distance, players exploring independently

The two are linked. A typical sign of memory pressure is higher CPU use from garbage collection, as Java works harder to free memory. So a RAM shortage can look like a CPU problem.

Worlds add up too. Each world runs on its own main thread, so several busy worlds use more CPU than one.

Server lag or connection lag?

Answer these before you change anything:

QuestionWhat it points to
Does everyone lag at the same moment, or just one player?Everyone: the server. One player: their connection or PC
When did it start? After an update or a mod change: look at that change first
Did you add mods recently?Remove the newest one and compare a session
How many players are exploring far apart? Each separate group loads its own area, which raises RAM use
Are the laggy players far from the server's region?Network distance, not server load

Hypixel recommends watching RAM and CPU while people play, because usage depends heavily on player behavior. Note what was happening when the lag hit. If it only happens when the group splits up, compare a session where everyone stays together.

1. Lower the max view radius

This is the biggest single fix. Hypixel recommends limiting maximum view distance to 12 chunks (384 blocks) for both performance and gameplay.

For scale, even 12 chunks covers 384 blocks, which the manual puts at roughly 24 Minecraft chunks. Minecraft servers default to 10 chunks (160 blocks). A newly generated config.json can start well above 12 (the one shown in our settings guide has MaxViewRadius at 32), and Hypixel says to expect higher RAM use with default settings. Check what your server uses before anything else.

Stop the server

Stop it and wait until it's offline. The server can overwrite config edits made while it runs.

Set MaxViewRadius

In Files, open the root config.json and set MaxViewRadius to 12 or lower. Leave the rest of the file as it is.

Start and test

Start the server and play a normal session. If RAM still sits near your limit, try a lower value.

Root config.json excerpt
{
  "MaxViewRadius": 12
}

Self-hosted, it's the same key in the server's config.json, which sits in Server/ if you use the official layout.

On Update 6 and later, /maxviewradius in Console shows the current cap when you run it with no argument, and sets a new cap when you give it a number. See admin commands and server settings.

The Server Manual's recommended plugins include Nitrado:PerformanceSaver, which dynamically limits view distance based on resource usage. If you try it, check that it supports your server build, like any other mod.

2. Reduce loaded worlds

Each world runs on its own main thread and loads its own area. If your server runs extra worlds alongside your main one, every busy world adds CPU and RAM load.

Worlds live in universe/worlds/. To stop one loading, back up, stop the server, and move that world's folder somewhere outside universe/worlds/. Keep Defaults.World in the root config.json pointing at the world your group plays on.

3. Check your mods

If lag started after a mod change, remove the newest mod first and play a session without it.

Back up and stop

Create a backup and stop the server.

Move the newest mod out

In Files, move the most recently added file out of mods/. Keep the file so you can put it back.

Start and compare

Start the server and compare a session. If the lag is gone, check that mod's page for a version that supports your build.

Removing a mod that adds blocks or items can affect saved content. That's why the backup comes first. If your world relies on a mod's content, test the removal on a copy.

Add mods back one at a time so you know which one causes trouble. See installing mods.

4. Give the server more RAM

Add RAM when view distance is already at 12 or lower and memory still runs near the limit during busy sessions, or when CPU climbs as memory fills up. If the lag comes from lots of players or mobs while RAM has room to spare, the CPU is the limit, and more RAM won't help much.

Hypixel's minimum is 4 GB. Use the Hytale server requirements calculator with your player count, view distance, and play style, and see server requirements for sizing.

Self-hosted: set an explicit memory limit with Java's -Xmx. With the official start.sh or start.bat, put JVM arguments in a jvm.options file next to the script, one per line:

jvm.options
-Xms2G
-Xmx4G

Raise -Xmx in steps and watch usage, and leave memory free for the operating system.

On berrybyte: Hytale plans come in 4, 8, 12, and 16 GB. We recommend 8 GB for most friend groups, and 12 or 16 GB for bigger groups, heavy mod lists, or players who explore far apart. If your world has outgrown your PC or a smaller plan, moving to more memory is the direct fix.

5. Choose a region near your players

Distance doesn't slow the server down, but it adds delay to everything for players far from it. berrybyte offers US East, US West, and EU Central. Pick the one closest to most of your group.

Faster startup is a separate fix

Self-hosted servers can use the AOT cache that ships with the server, HytaleServer.aot. It improves boot times by skipping JIT warmup:

java -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip

It's a boot-time improvement, so don't expect it to fix lag during a busy session.

After Chapter 1

Chapter 1 arrives on October 12, 2026 with the first handcrafted dungeon, goblins, Goblin Breach world events with temporary portals, and gadgets such as rocket boots, a glider, and boats. More to do and more ways to travel can mean more mobs active and players spreading out, both of which raise load.

Watch RAM and CPU during your first sessions after the update, and lower view distance if RAM climbs.

The Update 7 pre-release notes add a World Settings toggle to turn World Events on or off for Exploration worlds. It's a pre-release feature, so it may change before release. For the update itself, see how to prepare for Chapter 1.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Hytale server lagging?

Usually because it's short on RAM or CPU. RAM use grows with view distance and players exploring apart, and CPU use grows with player and mob counts. Lower MaxViewRadius to 12 chunks or less first, then check loaded worlds and recently added mods.

What view distance should a Hytale server use?

Hypixel recommends a maximum of 12 chunks (384 blocks) for both performance and gameplay. Set MaxViewRadius in the root config.json, and go lower if RAM stays near your limit while your group is online.

How much RAM does a Hytale server need?

Hypixel's minimum is 4 GB. Higher view distance, players exploring apart, extra worlds, and mods all need more. On berrybyte, 8 GB is the plan we recommend for most friend groups.

Will more RAM fix Hytale server lag?

Only when memory is the bottleneck. A server short on RAM often shows higher CPU use from garbage collection. If the lag comes from lots of players or mobs while RAM has room to spare, the CPU is the limit and more RAM won't help much.

Is it Hytale server lag or my connection?

If everyone lags at the same moment, it's likely the server. If only one player lags, check that player's connection, their distance from the server's region, and their PC.
