How to install mods on a Hytale server

Install Hytale server mods by stopping the server, backing up, uploading one trusted .zip or .jar into mods/, then starting and checking the console. Server plugins usually run server-side; follow each mod's client requirements. The client Mod Browser does not replace Files for server installs.

Install mods on a Hytale dedicated server by stopping the server, taking a backup, uploading one trusted .zip or .jar into mods/, then starting and reading the console. The official Hytale Server Manual is the same path: download from a source such as CurseForge and drop the file in mods/.

Server plugins generally run on the server. That does not mean every mod auto-delivers to clients or that players never install anything. Follow each mod's client, dependency, and version notes.

Before you start

  • You need Files on berrybyte (or SFTP) so you can upload into mods/.
  • Match the mod to this server's current build and protocol. After an official update, client and server must share the exact protocol version.
  • Take a backup first. Removing a content mod later can leave world data that expected those items or blocks.

Upload one file at a time and watch the console after each start. A bundle of untested mods is the usual way to hide which file broke boot.

Install a mod

Stop the server

Use Stop in the sidebar or Overview and wait until the server is offline. See Start, stop & restart if you need the power controls.

Create a backup

Open Backups and create a manual backup before you change mods/ or the world. Restore is much faster than reconstructing a save.

Download a trusted file

Get a .zip or .jar from a source you trust. The official manual names CurseForge as an example. Confirm the mod page lists your server's current version, and download any required dependencies the same way.

Upload into Files → mods/

In the dashboard, open Files, go to mods/ at the server root, and upload one file. Do not drop it in universe/, a world folder, or the server root next to config.json.

Start and read the console

Start the server and watch for load errors, duplicate-plugin warnings, or validation failures. If the server crashes, remove the file you just added before you try anything else.

Some mods write extra config after the first successful start. Leave those generated files alone until you have a clean boot, then edit them the same way you edit server settings: stop, change, save, start.

Client installs and the Update 6 Mod Browser

Treat client requirements as per-mod, not as a global rule.

  • Server plugins usually run only on the dedicated server. Players may still need a matching game build.
  • Asset packs or client mods may ask players to install the same files locally. If the mod page says that, believe it.
  • Do not promise that the server will push every file to every client.

The official Update 6 notes describe a Mod Browser on the Hytale main menu for discovering, filtering, and installing mods into the client library. Those notes do not say the browser writes into a dedicated server's mods/ folder. Keep using Files for server installs unless Hypixel documents a server-side install path later.

Keep the game client and the server on the same patchline. A client on pre-release will not stay in step with a release server.

Why a mod will not load

Wrong folder

The file must sit directly in mods/ at the server root. A copy in universe/worlds/<name>/, in your local game folder, or still inside an extra zip-of-a-zip will not load.

Incompatible build or protocol

Hytale requires the client and server to share the exact protocol version after an update. A mod built for an older protocol, or for a different patchline, can block startup or reject joins. Check the mod page against this server's version.

Conflicts or duplicates

Two copies of the same mod, two mods that patch the same system, or a missing dependency will show up as warnings or a crash. Remove the last change, restart, and add files back one at a time.

Crash on start

Restore the backup if the world will not load, then isolate the file. If the crash is unrelated to the new mod, use the console lines in a support ticket.

If a specific mod still fails after a clean mods/ folder and a matching build, open a support ticket with the server linked and the mod filename in the report.

See every Hytale guide for authentication, settings, join, and setup.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I install mods on a Hytale server?

Place each trusted .zip or .jar in the mods/ folder at the server root. On berrybyte that is Files → mods/. Do not put mods in a world folder or in the client UserData directory and expect the dedicated server to load them.

Do players need to install mods to join a Hytale server?

Not always. Server plugins generally run on the server. Some mods still require a matching client install, extra assets, or a matching protocol. Read each mod's page instead of assuming the server will push files to every player.

Why did my Hytale server crash or fail to start after I added a mod?

The usual causes are a file in the wrong folder, a build that does not match the server protocol, two copies of the same mod, or a conflict. Remove the last file you added, restart, and add mods back one at a time after a backup.

Does the Update 6 Mod Browser install mods on my dedicated server?

Official Update 6 notes describe the Mod Browser as a Hytale main-menu tool for discovering and installing mods on the client. They do not say it writes files into a dedicated server's mods/ folder, so keep using Files for server installs.

Where should I download Hytale server mods?

Use a trusted source that lists your server's current build. The official Hytale Server Manual names CurseForge as an example. Avoid unmarked archives and confirm the file is a .zip or .jar built for your protocol version.
