Hytale server requirements: RAM, Java 25 and player count
A Hytale server needs Java 25 and at least 4 GB of RAM. berrybyte recommends 8 GB for most friend groups and 12 or 16 GB for bigger groups, heavy mods, or players exploring far apart. View distance is the main driver of RAM use.
A Hytale server needs Java 25 and at least 4 GB of RAM, according to Hypixel's Server Manual. For most friend groups, berrybyte recommends 8 GB, with 12 or 16 GB for bigger groups, heavier mod lists, or players exploring far apart.
Official requirements
The Hytale Server Manual lists these requirements:
| Resource | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Runtime | Java 25, 64-bit (Hypixel recommends Adoptium) |
| Architecture | x64 or arm64 |
| Memory | At least 4 GB |
| CPU | Scales with player and entity counts (NPCs, mobs); no core count published |
| Network | QUIC over UDP; default port 5520 |
On berrybyte, Java and the port are set up for you. On your own machine, leave memory for the operating system as well as the server.
How much RAM you need
Hypixel says resource use "heavily depends on player behavior," so there's no official table by player count. This is berrybyte's planning estimate, not an official benchmark:
| Plan | Price | Good starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB | $9.95/month | Small groups and light exploring |
| 8 GB | $19.95/month | Most friend groups (recommended) |
| 12 GB | $29.95/month | Bigger groups, heavier mod lists, or players exploring far apart |
| 16 GB | $39.95/month | The biggest groups, heavy mod lists, or higher view distances |
For a number based on your own group, the calculator starts at Hypixel's 4 GB floor and adds RAM for extra players, groups exploring apart, view distance above 12 chunks, mods, and world age.

Change view distanceSet MaxViewRadius and other options in config.json.
Why view distance matters
The manual calls view distance the main driver of RAM use. RAM grows with the loaded world area: a bigger view distance loads more of the world around each player, and players exploring independently each load their own area. That's why a scattered group needs more RAM than the same group building together.
Hypixel recommends capping view distance at 12 chunks (384 blocks) for both performance and gameplay. For comparison, Minecraft servers default to 10 chunks (160 blocks), while the manual puts Hytale's default view distance of 384 blocks at roughly 24 Minecraft chunks. Expect a Hytale server to use more RAM than a Minecraft server with the same players.
The server-wide cap is MaxViewRadius in the root config.json, measured in
Hytale chunks. A freshly generated config can start at 32, the same
default that /maxviewradius reset
restores. That's well above the recommended 12, so setting
it to 12 is the first change to make when RAM runs high.
How many players can a Hytale server hold?
Hytale doesn't document a fixed player limit. How many players a server handles comfortably depends on three things:
- RAM: set by how much world is loaded at once.
- View distance: a bigger view loads more of the world around each player.
- How far apart players explore: five players in one base load less world than five players on five separate expeditions.
CPU matters too. The manual ties it to high player or entity counts, such as lots of NPCs and mobs.
MaxPlayers in config.json only controls how many people can join at once.
Raising it doesn't add RAM or CPU. Watch RAM and CPU during a busy session,
lower view distance before raising the player cap, and see
how to fix Hytale server lag if things slow down.
When performance drops
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| RAM stays near the plan limit | Lower MaxViewRadius and review mods; then consider more RAM |
| CPU climbs with no new players | Check memory too; the manual names higher CPU from garbage collection as a typical sign of memory pressure |
| Lag while players explore apart | Compare a session where the group stays together |
| Slow first boot after an update | Let the download and world loading finish |
| Crash after a mod change | Read the first mod error and check build compatibility |
Note your build, mod list, player count, and RAM use when you ask support for sizing help.

Frequently asked questions
How much RAM does a Hytale server need?
Hypixel's official minimum is 4 GB with Java 25. berrybyte recommends 8 GB for most friend groups, and 12 or 16 GB for bigger groups, heavier mod lists, players exploring far apart, or higher view distances.
How many players can a Hytale server hold?
Hytale doesn't document a fixed player limit. Capacity depends on RAM, view distance, and how far apart players explore, while CPU use rises with player and entity counts. MaxPlayers in config.json limits who can join but doesn't add capacity.
Is 4 GB enough for a Hytale server?
4 GB is Hypixel's minimum and suits small groups with light exploring. If RAM stays near the limit during play, lower the view distance first, then move to a larger plan.
What view distance should a Hytale server use?
Hypixel recommends a maximum of 12 chunks (384 blocks). A generated config can start MaxViewRadius at 32, so set it to 12 in the root config.json to save RAM.
Is the Hytale RAM calculator an official benchmark?
No. The calculator starts from Hypixel's official 4 GB minimum and adds berrybyte's planning estimates. Watch your own server during a busy session before treating a plan as enough.
