How to host a Better MC server
Create a Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 server, keep the Forge edition matched, join from the same v59 profile, and fix edition, Java, and memory problems.

Better MC has several editions. This guide is BMC4 [FORGE] for Minecraft 1.20.1. Do not install BMC5, BMC3, or BMC2 unless that is the pack the server is actually running.
Create the Better MC server
Open the Better MC page
Go to Better MC server hosting. Check that the pack name is Better MC [FORGE] BMC4.
Choose a location and plan
Start with the RAM shown in the server details. Pick the region closest to most players.
Finish checkout
Keep Better MC attached. berrybyte installs BMC4 v59 and a compatible Forge runtime.
Wait for first boot
Open Console and wait until startup finishes. BMC4 is a large vanilla-plus pack, so the first install takes longer than vanilla Minecraft.
Install BMC4 on every computer
Search for the Forge edition
In the Modrinth App or CurseForge app, install Better MC [FORGE] BMC4. Skip BMC5 [NeoForge] and the Fabric BMC2/BMC3 listings.
Match version v59
Open the server's modpack details and select that exact BMC4 release. A newer CurseForge build cannot join an older Modrinth server.
Launch the profile once
Let Minecraft reach the main menu before adding the server. BMC4 needs Java 17 or newer on the client.
Join
When Console shows the server is ready, open Overview, copy Server address, and add it under Multiplayer from the BMC4 profile. Include the port.
If a player can reach vanilla Minecraft but not Better MC, they usually have the wrong edition or version. Confirm the profile name before changing the server.
Update BMC4 without losing the world
Create a backup
Open Backups and create a restore point before changing the pack.
Stop the server
Do not change a modpack while the world is saving.
Change the complete BMC4 release
Use Overview → Modpack → Change. Stay on the Forge BMC4 project; do not switch the server to BMC5 or Fabric to "update."
Update every player
Move all launcher profiles to the same BMC4 release, then start the server and watch Console.

Fix common Better MC server problems
The wrong Better MC edition was installed. BMC5, BMC3, and BMC2 cannot join BMC4 Forge. Reinstall Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 and match the version in the server details.
Java is older than 17. BMC4 needs Java 17 or newer. berrybyte selects the server runtime automatically. A player still on Java 8 will crash before they reach the world.
The server lags after people explore. New biomes and structures add load quickly. Move to the extra RAM option shown above before removing mods.
A player cannot join after a CurseForge update. The server on this page uses the Modrinth BMC4 release shown above. Match that exact version instead of assuming the newest file on another site is the same pack.
