How to host a Homestead server
Run the Homestead modpack for friends, pick the right RAM, set up voice chat, and update an older world to Homestead 2.0 without losing items.
Use the Homestead server hosting page. It opens with Homestead, Fabric, Minecraft 1.20.1, and the starting RAM already selected.

What Homestead is
Homestead is a cozy Fabric pack by Cozy Studios. You farm, cook, build, tame animals, and follow questlines at your own pace. It runs on Minecraft 1.20.1.
It's a big pack. Close to 300 of its mods run on the server, so it needs more memory than a light pack. The author's server pack guide asks for at least 8 to 12 GB, and more once 3 to 5 or more players join.
Create the Homestead server
Open the Homestead page
Go to Homestead server hosting. Check that the pack name is Homestead.
Choose a plan and location
Start with 8 GB for a small group. Pick 12 GB if several friends will play at the same time. Choose the region closest to most of your group.
Finish checkout
Keep the pack attached. berrybyte installs Fabric and every server-side mod for you.
Wait for the first start
Open Console and wait until startup finishes. A big pack's first start can take a few minutes.
You don't need the separate server pack from Cozy Studios. That download leaves out a few mods because of CurseForge rules, then fetches them on first launch. The Modrinth release already lists them, so your server gets them at install.
Install Homestead on each computer
Install the pack
In the Modrinth App, search for Homestead and install it.
Match the server's version
Pick the exact release shown in the server details. Don't update your copy until the server does.
Launch once
Let Minecraft reach the main menu before you add the server.
Join the server
When Console shows the server is ready, open Overview and copy Server address. In the Homestead profile, open Multiplayer, add the server, and paste the address. Include the port.
Set up voice chat
Homestead includes Simple Voice Chat. Voice needs its own UDP port, apart from the game port.
Add a port
In your dashboard, open Network → Allocations and create a new allocation. Note the port number.
Set the port
Open config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties and set port= to that number.
Restart and test
Restart the server and join. If the voice icon shows a crossed-out plug, the port isn't reaching the server yet.
The Simple Voice Chat guide covers more fixes.
Update an older world to Homestead 2.0
Homestead 2.0 came out on October 23, 2026. It removes some mods, and their blocks and items are deleted when an older world loads on 2.0. The 2.0 announcement names these:
- Storage Drawers and Iron Chests: Restocked. Move every item into Sophisticated Storage first.
- Eldritch End. Its gear and blocks go away. Take enchantments off that gear first.
- Copper Age Backport. Vanilla Backport now covers that content, but the old blocks and items can't be saved.
Tell your players
Ask everyone to empty drawers and iron chests and to strip Eldritch End gear.
Create a backup
Stop the server, then open Backups and save a restore point. The backup guide shows how.
Change the pack version
Open Settings → Game Settings. Under Installed modpack, choose Change version and pick the new release. Your world files stay in place.
Update every player
Move each launcher profile to the same release, then start the server and check your bases.
Old worlds keep working. Only new chunks get the new terrain. To roll back, use Change version to pick 1.3.7, then restore the backup you took before the update.
Fix common Homestead problems
A player sees a mod mismatch. They usually have a different Homestead release. Match the version in the server details.
The server runs out of memory or lags. Homestead is heavy. Move to 12 GB, and fewer players exploring new land at once helps too.
Items vanished after the update. They came from a mod that 2.0 removed. Restore the backup you took before the update, empty those blocks, then update again.

Frequently asked questions
How much RAM does a Homestead server need?
The pack author asks for at least 8 to 12 GB for the server, and more for groups of 3 to 5 or more. Start with 8 GB and move to 12 GB once several players are on together.
What Minecraft version and loader does Homestead use?
Homestead 2.0 runs on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Fabric. Every player needs the same Homestead release as the server.
Can I update my old Homestead world to 2.0?
Yes. The world still loads, but 2.0 removes Storage Drawers, Iron Chests Restocked, Eldritch End, and Copper Age Backport. Anything made from those mods is deleted when the world opens on 2.0, so empty them and take a backup first.
Do I need the Homestead server pack?
Not on berrybyte. The Modrinth release lists every server-side mod, including Sophisticated Storage, so the server installs them directly.
Can Bedrock players join a Homestead server?
No. Homestead is a Java Edition modpack. Every player needs Minecraft Java Edition with the same pack installed.
